Job Description

The Controller is a key executive leadership role responsible for overseeing all financial activities of the National Western Stock Show. This position is crucial in ensuring the financial health and technological efficiency of the organization. The Controller will work closely with the executive team, staff, and other stakeholders to implement financial strategies, manage IT infrastructure, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Serves as a strategic partner to NWSS executives and staff.
  • Oversees the selection, training, and continual development of all direct reports.
  • Efficiently and effectively delegates duties based on staff skill level, knowledge, and abilities.
  • Collaborates with Department Heads to support financial and technological needs.
  • Participates in strategic planning and decision-making processes.
  • Fosters a culture of financial accountability and technological innovation.

Financial Management

  • Develops and maintains financial policies and procedures.
  • Oversees effective and efficient review & processing of Accounts Payable.
  • Oversees effective and efficient review & processing of Accounts Receivable.
  • Oversees accurate and timely payroll functions, including careful supervision of outside contractor payments.
  • Creates and ensures adherence to the Accounting Department budget.
  • Creates annual Accounting Department Sales, Marketing & Operations Plan.
  • Creates monthly financial statements, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and compliance with GAAP & other regulatory requirements. Distributes statements to the Board of Directors, City of Denver, and applicable Department Heads.
  • Holds monthly meetings with Department Heads to discuss budgets and any overages.
  • Maintains accurate and timely accounting of all capital expenditures. Ensures compliance with approved budget expenditures.
  • Leads the annual audit process, coordinating with outside auditors.
  • Oversees the preparation and filing of annual tax returns and other regulatory reports.
  • Schedules and prepares an agenda for Audit Committee meetings.
  • Assists in planning for and executing all approved measures for the security of NWSS finances and other assets.

Information Technology

  • Oversees all aspects of the organization’s IT needs, including but not limited to computer and phone systems maintenance, software management, and daily backups of all files to the cloud.
  • Develops and implements IT strategies aligned with organizational goals. Makes recommendations for improvements/upgrades to IT systems as necessary.
  • Ensures data integrity, cybersecurity, and compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Develops and manages the IT budget.
  • Responsible for all IT needs, including hard line and WiFi installation/activation, sales needs for live auctions, and ensuring all departments have the necessary hardware and software capabilities to fulfill their respective responsibilities.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, or a related field; MBA or CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial management, with at least 2 years in a
  • senior leadership role.
  • Experience in the non-profit sector, preferably relating to agriculture or livestock.

Schedule Requirements

The primary schedule for this position is Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm.

Certain events and occasions will occasionally arise which will result in the need for early morning, late night, or weekend hours in order to perform the essential functions of this position.

Like all NWSS team members, this position will need to be on-site every day during the annual Stock Show, typically for 12-16 hours at a time.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. ·

Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. ·

Must be able to navigate various departments of the organization’s physical premises.

Working Environment

The National Western Complex is a multi-purpose indoor and outdoor commercial and agricultural complex where dusty conditions and animals may exist. This position will primarily work in a professional office setting. Frequent travel to event locations, partner sites, and meetings can be expected. Occasionally, this position will be required to work outside in all weather conditions or around livestock, particularly during the annual Stock Show.

Compensation & Benefits

  • This is a full-time salaried/exempt position with a starting annual salary range of $125,000 to $140,000 a year, depending on experience
