Job Description
Primary Function
Under general direction, performs professional engineering work related to the district’s electrical substations.
*May also be consulted on a 24-hour basis for emergency engineering issues or emergency repair supervision. Distinguishing Characteristics This is an entry-level engineering role without professional registration.
Work is performed under the supervision of a registered engineer.
Advancement requires certification and experience, and openings at higher levels.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in electrical engineering design for new or expanded substations.
Coordinate studies performed by contractors regarding plant performance, economics, reliability, etc.
Prepare specifications for engineering and construction services and equipment.
Review vendor proposals and make recommendations.
Help prepare annual capital and operations/maintenance budgets.
Ensure compliance with current and future regulatory requirements.
Keep superiors informed via verbal and written reports.
Marginal Duties
Coordinate with suppliers to ensure compliance with specs.
Conduct plant performance tests to identify improvements.
Assess current systems and recommend repairs/improvements.
Support operations and maintenance teams as needed.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
Option 2: Associate’s degree in electrical engineering + 4 years substation design experience + EIT (Engineer-In-Training) certificate.
Licensing
Valid California driver’s license.

Knowledge of: Engineering principles & practices
Substation design, operation, maintenance
Electricity, mechanics, materials
Advanced math: exponents, quadratics, permutations, etc.
Business/engineering software

Interpret technical documents, legal texts, policies, and financials
Handle emergencies with sound judgment
Communicate with diverse stakeholders
Prioritize and handle multiple tasks
Use statistical and mathematical analysis

Work Environment Primarily office-based (well-lit, climate controlled)
Occasionally exposed to:
